A recent report issued by the UN Broadband Commission revealed that Qatar ranks second worldwide with 96 per cent household internet penetration, followed by the UAE (95 per cent).

A report by the Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics (Sustainable Development Indices 2015) has earlier affirmed the rise in internet usage among people living in Qatar at a rate of 57.3 per 100 inhabitants in 2014 as compared to the global average 38 and that of middle-income countries 33, yet it is lower than that of EU countries 76 and those with high subscriptions 78.

The report has also speculated that internet usage among people in Qatar would see a remarkable rise in the next period, especially with the implementation of a plan to link everything in Qatar with broadband internet. In this regard, Qatar National Broadband Network (Qnbn) has signed agreements with licensed communication providers in the country to provide broadband services through optical fibers with the aim of covering the needs of house by 95% and companies by 100%. Meanwhile, the Commission pointed out that Qatar ranked 30 worldwide in terms of the number of mobile internet subscriptions in 2015 at a rate of 80 subscriptions for every 100 inhabitants.
